A calm vet visit starts long before you walk through the clinic door. The steps you take at home — and during the journey — have a far greater impact on your pet's stress levels than anything that happens in the examination room itself.
1. Withhold Food Before Travel
A light stomach reduces nausea during the car journey, which in turn reduces the pet's association of travel with discomfort. Check with your vet on timing, especially if blood tests are scheduled.
2. Exercise Before the Appointment
A well-exercised dog is a calmer dog. A brisk 20-minute walk before leaving home burns nervous energy and lowers cortisol levels ahead of the visit.
3. Use Familiar Scents
Bring a blanket or clothing item that smells of home. Familiar scents are deeply reassuring for animals in unfamiliar environments.
4. Stay Calm Yourself
Pets are highly attuned to human emotion. If you're tense, your pet will be too. Take a few deep breaths and project confidence — your pet will follow your lead.
5. Ask for a Fear-Free Appointment
Many clinics, including ours, offer fear-free or low-stress handling techniques. Simply ask when booking and we'll do everything we can to accommodate your pet's needs.
